With a glorious history of more than 2000 years and a strong tradition of maintaining Buddhism after Lord Buddha’s Parinirvana (Death), Sri Lanka is one of the major pilgrimage sites in Asia for Buddhists. With a roughly 74 percent Buddhist population, Sri Lanka’s unique history is evident in the ruins of major events from the past at our heritage sites, including Kandy, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambulla, and others.
